Bird Park of Hortobágy
The aim of the Hortobágy Bird Park is to cure injured and sick birds that have been found in the country and to release them back into the wild. In the open-air hospital, visitors can observe the recovering birds through glass walls and even watch a surgery.
Story from
The park, which is run by a foundation, has been operating on this site for more than 20 years. The examination, operating theatre, laboratory and X-ray rooms needed for the hospital's operation were built in 1999. The institution moved to a visitor centre in 2006, which houses an ornithological exhibition, an eco-telehouse and a display hospital. The park includes bird gardens, a large fountain, a pond system and a playground.
Visiting hospital
The professionals and volunteers here work with 200-300 birds a year, a third of which can be returned to the wild. During the spring to autumn period, they may help more than 100 injured or sick animals at a time. Most commonly, birds are electrocuted or shot and hit a reflective surface. The soundproofed wards are glass-walled and cannot be seen from the outside, so treatment can continue uninterrupted. Visitors may even witness an operation.
Bird Park
Visitors can see original artefacts, X-ray machines, photos, taxidermy and videos, and learn how to help birds in the wild, what the sources of rabies are and how to prevent trouble. The experience is rounded off by the eco-telehouse and the park's large and small ponds, lakes and playground.
